Madrid waiting on the world

World Youth Day News Story
Pope Benedict XVI
With less than 200 days to go until World Youth Day 2011 (15-21 August), the city of Madrid is eagerly awaiting the arrival of pilgrims from around every corner of the globe.

Thousands of families and Parishes are already preparing for event. The city of Madrid alone has 476 Parishes, while the region has a total of nearly 700.

Many Parishes who will be hosting pilgrims are already displaying large posters of welcome as a sign that they are praying and preparing for the arrival of World Youth Day participants.

Work is also underway to prepare the lighting of Madrid’s key landmarks such as the Prado Museum, the Stock Exchange Building, the Central Post Office, and 'La Casa de América'.

Madrid is also preparing an unforgettable reception for Pope Benedict XVI - hundreds of bikers from across Europe have offered to accompany the Holy Father from Barajas Airport to the Plaza de Cibeles, and schools and neighborhood groups will decorate buildings and bridges along the way.

When the Holy Father reaches the Puerta de Alcalá, he will meet with young people from all over the world.

The Royal Guards will most likely escort the Pope to the podium while the Spanish Air Force Aerobatics Team 'Águila', traces the flags of Spain and the Vatican in the sky.

For all the details of how you can participate in World Youth Day - or help a young person undertake this once-in-a-lifetime journey - go the WYD Pages on the Catholic Youth Parramatta site.
