Preparation for next year’s Catholic Diocese of Parramatta pilgrimage to World Youth Day (WYD) in Krakow, Poland, is well underway. We are ambitiously planning for an estimated 350-450 pilgrims based on previous European WYDs and the success, hard work and celebration in South America two years ago.
A Diocesan WYD Committee was appointed by Archbishop Anthony before his departure to Sydney. The committee has met five times and will continue to meet each month.

Once again the Catholic Education Office (CEO) has appointed an Executive Officer to work on our diocesan pilgrimage. Mark Tuffy commenced this full-time role in November last year. He was formerly the Acting Principal of St Patrick’s Marist College, Dundas.
Mark and I are the official, joint pilgrimage coordinators for the Diocese and will be the point of contact for the new national tour company COSMOS.
An added bonus will be my appointment by Archbishop Anthony, who is the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Bishop’s Delegate for Youth, to the Australian World Youth Day Committee for a period of three years, influencing the national vision and implementation of Australia’s WYD Project leading up to Krakow and beyond.
A mission project has now been approved by our Diocesan Administrator and will be carried out en route to Krakow.

Four members of our WYD Committee travelled to the Philippines in November to liaise with a local community about the possibility of our young people working with their youth in a spirit of service and cultural exchange. It is hoped this will have a positive, lasting and ongoing impact for a number of disadvantaged communities.
The intention will be for CYP and CEO to facilitate ongoing mission trips to this location post-WYD and into the future.
In May this year, the Executive Director of Education, Director of CYP, Chair of the diocesan WYD Committee, and WYD Executive Officer will travel to Poland with representatives from across Australia to risk assess and familiarise themselves with the 2016 pilgrimage.

Stay tuned for details about pilgrim and leader information nights and ways for our broader Catholic community to contribute to the success of this formation experience for our young people.
