Vinnies' Victorian Cross print auction for disaster recovery

10/02/2011

Of all the orders and decorations open to members of the Australian Defence Force, the Victoria Cross remains the most coveted and respected. Those honoured with the decoration have been recognised for their courage and devotion to duty.

In a bid to raise much needed funds for those Australians affected by the recent natural disasters, the St Vincent de Paul Society is auctioning a limited edition commemorative print of Australia’s three living Victoria Cross recipients.

This rare print is the first time the Australia Army has photographed Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith VC, Corporal Mark Donaldson VC and Keith Payne VC OAM together, and is being offered by the trio and the Australian Defence Force.

“We are humbled by the Australian Defence Force’s generous offer of the commemorative print to help us raise money for our disaster relief appeal,” St Vincent de Paul Society Natioanl CEO John Falzon said.

“We are now calling on the public to recognise their contributions, and start bidding.”

Mr Falzon said all money raised would go directly towards helping rebuild the lives of devastated Australians, not only now, but long after the national headlines have disappeared.

“We are committed to assisting in the long-term recovery of people affected by these terrible disasters,” Mr Falzon said.

“Financial donations are the easiest way to make sure we can quickly provide assistance to those who need it.

“By buying goods locally we help support and stimulate the local business economy as they too struggle.”
