Parramatta family meets Holy Father

Catholic Diocese of Parramatta Seminarian Jack Green and his family had the honour of meeting the Holy Father after the Closing Mass of 7th World Meeting of Families in Milan, Italy (30 May to 3 June).

Jack, parents Stuart and Donna and sister Anna represented the Diocese at the Conference, along with CatholicCare Social Services - Diocese of Parramatta Senior Manager Ann O’Brien and her husband Peter.

The Greens were chosen to represent Oceania in sharing lunch with the Pope and 14 other families from around the world.

Rev Arnulfo ‘Larry’ Tolentino was ordained in a Mass of Solemnity in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Parramatta in June.

A Holy Relic of St Francis Xavier visited the Diocese in late November, as part of its National Pilgrimage of Grace.

The Holy Relic visited Holy Family Parish, Mt Druitt, St Francis Xavier’s Church in Wentworth Falls and St Patrick’s Cathedral in Parramatta.

An authentic first class relic of St Thérèse of Lisieux, in private hands, toured the Diocese in October.

The relic visited St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta and the Parishes of Holy Family East Granville and St Margaret Mary’s Merrylands.

Most Rev Robert McGuckin DD MCL JCL became the first Bishop from the clergy of the Parramatta Diocese, with his Episcopal Ordination as the sixth Bishop of Toowoomba on 11 July.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Most Rev McGuckin as Bishop of Toowoomba on 14 May. Prior to his appointment, Most Rev McGuckin had served as the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta’s Vicar General & Moderator of the Curia since 1997.

A Mass to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Ordination to Priesthood of Most Rev Kevin Manning DD, Bishop Emeritus of Parramatta, was held at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday 4 February.

Bishop Kevin was the principal celebrant for the Mass, which was concelebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Pell, Bishop Anthony Fisher OP, Bishop David Walker, Bishop Terry Brady, and priests of the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta and Sydney.

Aboriginals, Torres Strait Islanders, Pacific Islanders and the wider Catholic community celebrated a moving Mass for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Sunday at the Holy Family Centre Emerton on 1 July.

This was the first time the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta had celebrated ATSI Sunday as a Diocese.

It will now be celebrated annually, symbolising the unity of purpose within the Catholic community.

Two Papal Honours and 22 Diocesan Medals of Honour for 2012 were presented by the Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, on the Feast of Christ the King (Sunday 25 November).

Deacon James Phelan received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (Cross of Honour) and Mrs Valda Silvy received the Benemerenti Medal during the Solemn Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta.
