Supporting teachers in East Timor

An East Timorese teacher and interpreter has embarked on a two-month English course in Sydney, with the help of the Catholic Education Offices of the Parramatta and Broken Bay Dioceses.

Goris Seran is one of the teachers in the East Timor Teacher Placement program which aims to improve the teaching of English and Mathematics in schools of the Manufahi District, Timor-Leste. The program is a joint partnership between the Dioceses of Parramatta and Broken Bay.

Each year, teachers from these Dioceses visit the program to share their training and expertise.

Catholic Education Parramatta Diocese Executive Director Greg Whitby said the initiative shows what can be achieved when partnership, collaboration and mutual respect are the basis for supporting this work.

"On my visit to East Timor last year, I saw first hand, the wonderful work of Goris and his colleagues," Greg said.

"I am extremely pleased to be able to offer our support towards his professional learning to train teachers in East Timor, which will ultimately benefit the students they teach."
