In front of a packed media conference on Friday 19 September, Catherine McAuley Westmead school captain Karina Wright thanked Sydney Archbishop-elect Anthony on behalf of all the Parramatta Diocesan schools for his love and support.

The Vatican announced on Thursday 18 September that Pope Francis had appointed, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, the Bishop of Parramatta, as the ninth Archbishop of Sydney.

In a delightful twist at the media conference, the students from Catherine McAuley Westmead, Parramatta Marist High Westmead, St Patricks Primary Parramatta and Wollemi College Werrington became the journalists asking Archbishop-elect Anthony lots of questions.

A student from St Patricks Primary asked how he felt about being chosen as the new Archbishop of Sydney. Archbishop-elect Anthony said he was shocked and a little intimidated. When asked if he always wanted to be a Bishop he explained that as the Dominican Order was a more contemplative Order, he never thought he would be a Bishop. However, he had made a vow to serve God as and he would do his best.

Responding to a flurry of student enquiries, the Archbishop-elect revealed he found out last week he was chosen and that he would take up his new position some time in November.

Executive Director of Schools, Greg Whitby, said he is delighted that our Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, has been appointed as the ninth Archbishop of Sydney.

Archbishop-elect Anthony has been a great advocate for education and the young people of Western Sydney, said Greg. He has a remarkable vision, fostering the New Evangelisation as part of the mission of the Catholic Church in Australia.

On behalf of our Catholic school communities, I thank Archbishop-elect Anthony for his great support of the work we do and his leadership; and ensuring our young people, teachers and school leaders are active collaborators in the life of the Church.

The Catholic Education Dioceses of Parramatta congratulates the Archbishop-elect on this significant appointment and ask for God’s blessing on him in his new role as Archbishop of Sydney.
