Francis Xavier: a saint for our part of the world

Holy Relic: The baptising right arm of St Francis Xavier.

A Catholic missionary born in 1506 in Spain, St Francis Xavier was co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

The Holy Relic is the right forearm of St Francis and is normally housed in the mother church of the Jesuits in Rome. Rarely allowed to leave the church, the Jesuits agreed to lend the Holy Relic to Australia as part of the Year of Grace.

Sydney Archdiocese Auxiliary Bishop, Most Rev Peter Comensoli, travelled with the Holy Relic on its journey from Rome to Australia.

"My hope is simply that those who come to encounter the Relic of St Francis Xavier will through his intercession, encounter Christ in their lives," Bishop Peter said.

"It will be all worthwhile even if just one person is touched in their own lives to come closer to Christ, it will be worth the effort."

St Francis Xavier is known as one of the greatest missionaries of the 16th century, who ventured far East. Along with St Therese of Lisieux, he is the co-patron saint of Australia.

"In a sense he's a saint for our part of the world, not a part of Europe of North America, but for our Southern and Eastern part of the world," Bishop Peter said.
