NAIDOC Week of reflection and celebration

From Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese

Each year, NAIDOC Week raises awareness about the history, culture and traditions of Australia's Indigenous people.

It is also an opportunity to recognise the ongoing contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have made to Australia, and a chance to celebrate their achievements.

On Friday night, 8 July more than 1,500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders will join community leaders, politicians and dignitaries at a Gala Ball at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of NAIDOC Week.

Among the attendees will be 2009's NAIDOC's Elder of the Year and Coordinator of the Archdiocese of Sydney's Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, Elsie Heiss.

Sydney's Aboriginal Catholic Ministry's co-executive and respected elder Graeme Mundine will attend, as will other renowned community leaders including Lowitja O'Donoghue.
