Australians will never forget the historic Canonisation of the nation’s first saint, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, and now the Canonisation and events leading up to it can be re-lived with the launch of a commemorative DVD.

The ‘Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Canonisation DVD’ was launched by former Australian Ambassador to the Holy See, The Honourable Tim Fischer AC, at a special event at Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney on Friday 16 March.

The DVD, which was produced by Catholic Communications Sydney, is more than three hours long and records all the excitement and historical significance of the events leading up to and including the Canonisation in Rome, on 17 October 2010.

Postulator for the Cause of St Mary MacKillop, Sr Maria Casey rsj, said it includes professional footage of events which has been graciously supplied by Vatican TV, the ABC, SBS, Networks 7, 9, and 10, as well as Sky TV.

"The DVD provides a wonderful opportunity to re-live the memories of the Canonisation, to reflect on the person of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and to be challenged by her life to make the world a happier and better place,” Sr Maria said.

Congregational Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph, Sr Anne Derwin rsj, said she was delighted that the DVD would allow people to re-live what was a period of great grace for the Church in Australia and for all Australians.

“So many people tell us how special that time leading up to and including the canonisation was for them,” Sr Anne said.

“For those who went on pilgrimage to the Canonisation itself, the DVD will hold very special memories. But it will also revisit all the wonderful things that were going on here in Australia to celebrate this historic event, in North Sydney, Penola and right around the country.”

Australian Catholic Bishops Conference President, Archbishop Philip Wilson said the DVD was a tangible reminder of St Mary’s ongoing presence in our lives.

“I urge people to keep learning about Mary’s life and to ask her to be with us and help us appreciate how close God is to us,” he said.

The Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, said that in watching the DVD of those historic events in 2010 people would come to know a Saint and a great Australian.

“St Mary of the Cross is one of us. Her voice is an Australian voice, the voice of a great woman all Australians can recognise as one of their own,” he said.

Sr Maria thanked all who helped bring this final initiative of the Canonisation process to fruition.

“We are very grateful to everyone who has worked on this DVD, from the journalists and camera crews who took the extraordinary footage, to the team at Catholic Communications, Sydney, the Sisters who had input, and all who helped to produce such an outstanding record of the Canonisation and the events surrounding it,” she said.

The DVD can be ordered online at www.marymackillopplace.org.au/store.

Friday 16 March also saw Mary MacKillop Place Museum launch an exciting new interactive touchscreen display.

The technologically advanced display is the first of its kind in the nation and tells the story of the contribution of St Mary of the Cross and Fr Julian Tenison Woods to education in Australia.
