Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP and the Parramatta WYD13 pilgrims journeying from Lima to Rio have arrived safely in Peru.

The pilgrims will spend five days in Lima, before visiting Iguazu Falls for three days and continuing onto Rio de Janeiro for WYD13 (23 to 28 July).

On their second day in Lima, Bishop Anthony and our pilgrims visited St Rose of Lima Church, where the Bishop gave his Homily for Votive Mass of St Rose of Lima.

Spirituality, identity and sense of mission

“Pilgrims go places and that sometimes changes them. Instead of a sea change or tree change, pilgrimage aims at P-change,” Bishop Anthony said in his Homily.

“Lima, Iguazu and Rio may affect you deeply, in your spirituality, identity and sense of mission. God may inspire you anew. Pilgrimage is about that sort of p-for-pilgrimage change. Seeing through that new identity and mission is what will bring ultimate happiness.

We start that new identity and mission today. We have a mission to fulfil here. We must share our faith and ideals through the work we do here. The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes St Rose saying, When we serve the poor and the sick, we serve Jesus. We must not fail to help our neighbors, because in them we serve Jesus. As we serve our neighbours during this mission experience in Lima, we’ll meet not only saints from long ago such as St Rose but living saints amongst our fellow pilgrims and the people we are visiting. They will all challenge us with the question from our Gospel: What is your life all about? What makes you happy? Is Christ your treasure?”
