The Knights of the Southern Cross, a foundation member of the International Alliance of Catholic Knights, has long sought to support local seminarians.
In the late 1980s, knights from a number of branches in the Diocese of Parramatta came together to raise money for students for the diocesan priesthood, for education expenses such as the purchase of books and accommodation.
In 1990, a trust deed for the Education Assistance of Students to the Priesthood for the Diocese was approved by Bishop Bede Heather and by KSC State Council.
Assistance could also be rendered to seminarians in religious orders (on request of and explicit approval by the bishop.) Thus was born the Seminarian Assistance Trust Fund.
This year $4500 was given to the Holy Spirit Seminary at Harris Park on the advice of the Rector, Rev Fr John Hogan.
The Trust Fund comprises a Capital Fund and an Endowment Fund. Briefly, 50% of funds are placed in each segment, with disbursements to be made from the Endowment Fund.
Funds were raised by various branches through trivia evenings, garage sales, donations, etc.
Since its inception there have been distributions of $7000 to the House of Formation at St Marys for the purchase of books and the like for use by the students.
In 2001 a further $10,000 was provided to Bishop Kevin Manning for similar purposes.
