John Aquilina was among a distinguished list of Catholics recognised in the Australia Day 2013 Honours.

The State Member for Blacktown from 1981-1991 and Riverstone from 1991-2011, Mr Aquilina was appointed as a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for his services to parliament.

Mr Aquilina currently serves as a member of the CatholicCare Social Services - Diocese of Parramatta (CCSS) Council, Chairman of the Blacktown Catholic Pastoral Working Party and a member of the Parramatta Diocesan Schools Council.

In 2011, the Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, invested Mr Aquilina as a Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Gregory the Great.

Mr Aquilina said he was honoured by the membership and hoped it was something all Blacktown residents could be proud of.

‘‘I think (the Australia Day honour) is hopefully a great opportunity for people of the west to say ‘yes our sons are worth these great honours’,’’ he told the Blacktown Sun.
