Rev James Phelan was presented with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (Cross of Honour) by the Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, on the Feast of Christ the King (Sunday 25 November).

Deacon James has been married to his wife Patricia for 43 years and they have three married children, Mark, Justin and Anne Marie, and five grandchildren.

James said the Papal Honour came as a complete surprise.

For the first time I was speechless!” he said. “I am overawed by the honour. My first thanks must go to Fr Arthur Bridge, Chairman of the Diocesan Honours Committee, who considered that my ministry and commitment should be acknowledged in this way.

“I also thank the committee who supported the award and recommended me to the Bishop. I most sincerely thank Bishop Anthony Fisher for submitting the application to Rome. My wife and family have supported all my ministry endeavours.”

James is the pastoral care administrator of Mt Druitt Hospital and assistant deacon in St Oliver’s Parish at Harris Park. He is a member of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission and the Diocesan Vocations Committee.
