When the World Youth Day Rio 2013 raffle was drawn on Palm Sunday this year, tickets were clutched expectantly as Bishop Anthony Fisher OP plucked the name of the winner from the barrel.
Erin Boffo from St Madeleine Sophie Barat Parish at Kenthurst took out the first prize – a gleaming new Yaris from Terry Shields Toyota Parramatta. A beaming Erin was presented with her car at the Terry Shields Toyota showroom last month.
Erin said she wanted to support WYD and had purchased 10 tickets. “I was absolutely stunned and thrilled. I don’t think anyone ever really buys raffle tickets expecting to win. We just wanted to support WYD. You just never think it is going to happen to you.”
In attendance to wish her well and hand over the all-important keys were the Vicar General for the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta, Very Rev Chris de Souza VG EV, Executive Officer WYD Rio 2013, Ian Jordan, and Government Sales Manager with Terry Shields Toyota, Gary Kemp.
The dealership has had a long association with the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta. “We have had a very good relationship with both the Diocese and Catholic Education for a long time,” Gary said. “We are always happy to lend our support.”
Ian Jordan said the raffle had been an outstanding success, raising in excess of $400,000 to fund the Diocese’s pilgrimage to WYD Rio from 23-28 July 2013. The Diocese has almost 250 pilgrims, including 80 high school students, going to Lima in Peru, Iguazu and Rio.
“This great result would not have been possible without the support of our parishes and schools. It was a wonderful exercise in recognising the spirit of community across the Diocese,” Ian said.
“It is terrific that so many will have the chance to go on a pilgrimage. I am very confident that all our pilgrims will come to Rio with a strong faith context representing their parish or school.”
Fr Chris said the Diocese was grateful to Terry Shields Toyota for providing the vehicle. “The money raised from this raffle is supporting a number of people to go to WYD 2013 which we know from past experience has been a great encouragement to the faith of many.
“It gives me great joy on behalf of the Diocese to acknowledge Erin as the winner. I congratulate Erin and hope she enjoys many years of happy and safe use of this vehicle.”
