If ever there was a phrase worth literally coining, it was Mary MacKillop’s maxim ‘never see a need without doing something about it’.

The Perth Mint has done just that today at Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney, unveiling its commemorative coin program to celebrate the 17 October Canonisation, life and legacy of Australia’s first Saint.

Struck from 1oz of 99.9 per cent pure silver and 1/10oz of 99.99 per cent pure gold, each coin is issued as official Australian legal tender and features a colour portrait of Blessed Mary with the inscription 'SAINT MARY MACKILLOP, AUSTRALIA’S FIRST SAINT', the 2010 year-date and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

In unveiling the tribute coins, Congregational Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph Sister Anne Derwin rsj gave an inspiring address, recalling Mary’s faith, grace and patience as she overcame numerous challenges in her life to pursue her calling.

“Mary lived her life to the full in her 67 years - so full that her legacy now pervades this land and beyond,” Sr Anne said. “The Sisters of St Joseph and many other women and men continue the legacy and find in Mary MacKillop their inspiration for living the Christian way of life.

“Mary MacKillop continues to capture the hearts of Australians because she believed in a fair go for all and always erred on the side of favouring the least, the most vulnerable and the poorest – and it was the compassionate love of God that motivated her to do so.”

‘A symbol of strength and heroic virtue’

Close to 200 attended the Saint Mary MacKillop Commemorative Coin Program Launch at Mary MacKillop Place this morning, with distinguished guests including Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell.

Artist Gary Pinto – the singer songwriter of the Canonisation song ‘Saint Mary MacKillop’ – performed at the launch with a student choir from St Paul of the Cross Primary School in Dulwich Hill.

Sr Anne Derwin rsj was joined for the official unveiling of the precious metal coins by The Perth Mint Chief Executive Officer, Ed Harbuz.

“Since Mary’s passing in 1909, she has attracted much veneration within Australia,” Mr Harbuz said.

“And, as she progresses toward sainthood, she has become an even greater symbol of strength and heroic virtue.

“The Perth Mint believes that both Saint Mary MacKillop coin tributes are befitting of the unique milestone of her Canonisation, and will remind us all of the compassion and generosity with which Mary lived her life.”

The Saint Mary MacKillop 1oz Silver Coin will retail for $89.50, while the 1/10oz Gold Coin can be obtained for $275.

Both commemoratives are individually presented in a gift box accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Only 7,500 silver commemorative coins will be issued by The Perth Mint, while the stricter mintage of 2,010 gold coins further recognises the year in which Australia’s first Saint was declared.

Both commemorative releases can be ordered from The Perth Mint Shop on FREECALL 1800 098 817, or via the Mint’s online store at http://www.perthmint.com.au/

The coins will also be available from Australia Post outlets, leading coin distributors and the Mary MacKillop Place Gift Shop in North Sydney. Delivery of the commemoratives will take place following the Canonisation of Mary MacKillop in Rome on 17 October.
