Firm in the faith: WYD Hymn released
The World Youth Day hymn and the 'WYD soundtrack' for Madrid 2011 have been released, with distribution underway from today.
The hymn - based on the text from the Apostle St Paul, 'Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith' - will accompany young people worldwide in their preparation and celebration of WYD 2011 in Madrid.
The hymn has seven verses, with the chorus (translated from Spanish):
Firm in the faith, we walk in Christ,
Glory always to Him! Glory always to Him!
We walk in Christ firm in the faith.
According to the author of the lyrics, Msgr César Franco - General Coordinator of WYD and Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid - the verses demonstrate the humanity of Christ in the traditional Spanish mystical style, and aim to bring that humanity closer to young people.
Fr Enrique Vázquez, a priest and religious music composer, was in charge of composing the music.
“The first challenge was to think of a melody that would help to understand, sing, and pray the text,” Fr Váquez said of the composition process.
“The verses begin with a more lyrical character which reflect the amazement, admiration, and gratefulness to the Person and work of Our Lord.”
There are three recorded versions of the piece: one liturgical, one instrumental (for large choirs) and a popular version to be accompanied by guitar.
The three versions, as well as the sheet music, are available for free on the official World Youth Day Madrid 2011 website
