Two hundred priests from across Australia, 33 Bishops and Archbishops, youth groups, family members and a large contingent from Victoria's Maltese community joined 4,000 other mourners for the Funeral Mass of Bishop Joseph Grech, who was laid to rest in the Crypt of Bendigo's Sacred Heart Cathedral on Thursday 6 January.

The Requiem Mass for Bishop Joe, as he was affectionately known, was celebrated by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, who when Archbishop of Melbourne, installed the Maltese-born prelate as the Sixth Bishop of Sandhurst on 27 April 2001.
