Christchurch's Catholic Cathedral beyond repair

Christchurch's 106-year-old Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament looks to have been damaged beyond repair in the wake of the 6.3 earthquake that devastated the New Zealand South Island city earlier this week.

As Catholics in Christchurch mourn the loss of life in the stricken city, Pope Benedict XVI has joined the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and the Australian Catholic Mission with a message of support to the Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev Barry Jones.

Commending the deceased to the merciful love of God, the Pontiff assured the people of the city and the nation that they were in his prayers, particularly those who are urgently working to assist the trapped and the injured, and the men and women labouring to restore essential services.
