Br Ruben of Jesus Martello FSF ordained to the diaconate
Brother Ruben of Jesus Martello FSF has been ordained to the diaconate by the Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, at St Bernadette’s Church in Dundas Valley on Tuesday 2 August.
"The Church invites us to consider what it means for this man, our brother, already conformed to the image of St Francis by his humble and guileless temper, his Franciscan formation and vows, now to join Francis in the Order of Deacons," Bishop Anthony said in his homily for the Mass of Ordination to the Diaconate.
"From an early age, young Ruben would celebrate ‘Mass’ at home, donning a colourful piece of material and using cut-up paper hosts. His family was his congregation and I understand he would preach to them long and learned homilies.
"Now he will draw on more adult learning but also upon the strength of the Holy Spirit. He will help bishops and priests as a minister of word, altar and service."
Br Ruben said his attraction to the priesthood from the age of 15 soon developed an appeal for religious life as well.
"Life in common and lived according to the spirit and rule of St Francis of Assisi - with its emphasis on evangelical perfection, as well as apostolic work combined with the contemplative dimension - were the most important aspects of the life that appealed to me," Br Ruben said.
He applied to enter the Friars of St Francis at the age of 18.Br Ruben made his final vows at St Bernadette’s Dundas Valley Parish, which is currently under the care of the Friars, in 2010.
