The Bishops of Australia have conveyed their condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of New Zealand following the Greymouth mining tragedy.

The Bishops received the sad news of the deaths of the miners during this week's plenary meeting at Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney.

At a Mass at the tomb of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, the Bishops offered prayers for the eternal rest of the deceased and for their grieving relatives.

"We ask you to convey sincerest condolences of the Catholic Bishops and people of Australia to the families of the deceased and the people of New Zealand," the Bishops said in a statement.
