Australian Bishops Message of Condolence to Coptic Christians

06/01/2011

A Message of Condolence to the Coptic Orthodox Community from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.

The Catholic Bishops of Australia wish to convey their deepest condolences to the victims and families of those killed and injured in the New Year’s Day’s Car bomb attack at Alexandria’s al‐Qiddissine (the Saints) church.

The cowardly nature of this attack as worshippers left a New Year’s Day celebration fills us with sadness and we extend our prayers to the Coptic Christian people both in Egypt and those now residing in Australia.

The Australian Bishops pray that people of all faiths can live in peace, and wish to extend their solidarity to the Christian people who have suffered discrimination and persecution. We pray for reconciliation and a just and peaceful solution to these religious conflicts.

The Bishops of Australia also pray that the fruits of the Middle Eastern Synod held last October in Rome may be experienced by the minority Christian Church. The Synod encouraged the Catholic communities throughout the Middle East to live in communion and to continue to offer a courageous witness of faith in the land so important to the origins of Christian faith.
