Australia's youngest bishop ordained

Catholic Communications reports on the ordination of Australia's youngest bishop, Archdiocese of Sydney Auxiliary Bishop Peter Comensoli.

At 47, Bishop Comensoli is Australia's youngest Bishop, but his ordination at St Mary's Cathedral on Wednesday 8 June was a double celebration with the gathering of many young priests and the 'older guard', including Cardinal George Pell who was celebrating his 70th birthday.

More recently the Parish Priest at Helensburgh in the Wollongong Diocese, Bishop Comensoli said he will miss his parishioners, family and friends from the south coast but is looking forward "to the next 30 years of hard work".

"I have been asked if this appointment is an honour for me, however, I feel it is an honour for my parents and family and very much for the people of Wollongong," Bishop Comensoli said.

Bishop Comensoli said he will face many challenges in his new role, but believes the biggest challenge will be that which every Christian faces today.

"That is letting people know Jesus is here in our lives. It is sometimes difficult in society where the Lord is often forgotten or even rejected. That is probably the chief task for me."
