The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has commended Prime Minister Julia Gillard for sticking to her election promise to support marriage between a man and a woman.

ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace said continual pressure by the Greens for non-mainstream social policy such as gay marriage and euthanasia was tempting some politicians to veer from the centre of politics.

“It is encouraging that the Prime Minister is prepared to stand up to the Greens. She is showing great integrity in keeping faith with her election commitments," Mr Wallace said.

“It also shows that the Prime Minister understands there are far more important issues facing our nation, despite the Greens declaring that gay marriage and euthanasia are their top priorities.

“It would be a shame if the ALP’s conference in 2012 broke with the current long-standing bi-partisan support for marriage between a man and a woman, as is being suggested by some party powerbrokers.”

Mr Wallace said ACL supported the Government’s moves to amend some 80-90 pieces of legislation which removed practical discrimination from same-sex couples but believed marriage should remain between a man and a woman.
