Blessed John XXIII Parish Stanhope Gardens parishioner and World Youth Day (WYD) pilgrim Trevor Tye's excitement in the countdown to Madrid 2011 went into overdrive when he received an unexpected phone call from Harvest Pilgrimages.
Unbeknowst to Trevor, all New Zealand and Australian pilgrims who registered for WYD before Australia Day were entered into a draw to win a $2000 WYD Gift Voucher.
Trevor described receiving the exciting news of his $2000 gift as very surreal but also something that makes him feel very blessed. In attending WYD (August 15-21), Trevor is keen to join with young people from all corners of the globe to share in the love of Christ - and in turn share this love with the rest of the world.
Trevor said he was drawn to WYD by the opportunity to go on a pilgrimage - in particular traveling to the Holy Land where he knows some amazing experiences await him - and the celebrations in Spain which will bring together so many cultures and experiences.
Trevor is one member of a group of young people from Stanhope Gardens busily preparing for Madrid, attending youth retreats, spiritual courses, WYD Formation Sessions and learning about Christ and the journey they’ll take to WYD 2011. Around this, they’re also learning some Spanish.
Sign of faith
At the first Diocesan WYD Formation Session, the new Catholic Diocese of Parrmatta WYD Cross was revealed.
The work of Fernando Mendez and the Year 12 wordwork class at St Paul’s Catholic College in Greystanes, this incredible sign of our faith has been created to involve all young people across the Diocese.
Leading up to WYD, it will travel the Diocese visiting schools, parishes and movements, bringing with it the invitation to travel to Madrid to celebrate WYD.
The design in fact features 'a cross within a cross': within the main cross sits a smaller, detachable cross.
At the Diocesan WYD Commissioning Mass for pilgrims and parishioners on 31 July, the smaller cross will be removed from the front of the main cross and taken overseas, travelling with each of the four Diocesan Pilgrimage groups as they make their way to Madrid. The larger cross will remain in the Diocese with the parishioners who will be celebrating WYD locally.
With six weeks left to register, now is the time to visit www.wydtours.com/parramatta for your chance to join in the spiritual journey of a lifetime to WYD Madrid 2011.
