‘Extraordinary gifts and generosity’: Papal & Diocesan Awards 2014 recipients

The recipients of three Papal Awards and 31 Diocesan Medals of Honour were announced by the Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, following Vespers in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta, on Friday 8 August.

Sr Rosemary Crumlin RSM received the Papal Award of the Croce pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (the Cross of Honour for the Church), for her dedicated service to the Catholic Church in Australia as Visual Arts Consultant and Educator. Sr Rosemary has number of distinguished publications to her credit and served on many distinguished boards and committeesHer religious vocation has led her to a succession of remarkable achievements as a school teacher, artist, educationist, women’s leadership consultant and a curator of major exhibitions of religious and spiritual art.

Sr Mary Louise Petro RSM also received the Croce pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, for her outstanding contribution to the people of Western Sydney as an Educator and community worker. Sr Mary Louise has spent 20 years in Catholic schools and 25 years engaged in youth ministry and pastoral care work, doing significant work at Mamre House in Orchard Hills. She has held a number of positions of responsibility within the Sisters of Mercy, Parramatta and is currently Congregational Vicar.

Marshall Joseph McMahon received the Benemerenti Medal Papal Award, for his long and distinguished career in Catholic education serving in a number of schools in NSW. He was Rector of St John’s College in the University of Sydney, changing the ethos of the college. Mr McMahon was an innovative leader in boys’ education and was highly regarded for his deep involvement and significant contributions to various committees. He has contributed to the life of his Parish in Springwood where he has taken an inspirational role in his work with St Vincent de Paul.

In his Homily, Bishop Anthony said the recipients of the Papal and Diocesan Awards were “all examples of people called to action by God, who have responded by way of serving Church and community in Western Sydney.”

As we hear the citations read we will be struck by the extraordinary gifts of the people of Western Sydney and the generosity of these ones in giving back to God and the community,” Bishop Anthony said.

2014 Diocesan Medal of Honour recipients

Brian Bradley

For dedicated service to the Parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Greystanes, starting the Night Watch patrols, involvement in St Vincent de Paul, Legion of Mary and ministry as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.

Marie Carney

For longstanding service to the Parish of St Monica's, North Parramatta as school secretary for 24 years, State Secretary of the Catholic Women’s League, dedicated involvement in RCIA and ministry as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and Reader.

Darley Davey

For 80 years of distinguished service to the Parish Holy Trinity, Granville, as a passionate member of the Legion of Mary, visitation to the sick and elderly, assisting with recording the parish history and organising events to promote community spirit. Darley passed away a few weeks ago and her award is being received by her nephew Gerard Pearson.

Patrica Doyle

For unfailing service to the parish of St John XXIII, Glenwood-Stanhope Gardens as Sacristan, Welcomer and Counsellor, RCIA Sponsor, training ‘novice’ sacristans, Senior Server and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. For past service to the Parishes of Granville supporting immigrants and organising socials.

Kevin Egan

For long standing service to the parish of Our Lady of the Way, Emu Plains as a member of the Parish Pastoral Council, Parish Finance Committee, Honorary Parish Accountant and Financial Manager, in Ministry of the word and volunteering for church projects.

Lorraine Ewer

For her dedication and commitment to the Sacramental Programme at the parish of St Madeleine Sophie Barat's, Kenthurst, preparing children and their parents for the Sacraments, serving on the Parish Council and in ministry as Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.

Aleki Fa'amausili Ailua

For his long standing service to the Parish of St Oliver Plunkett's, Harris Park, and the Samoan Community, in serving as Sacristan and Acolyte, maintaining the church and grounds and communicating with his Samoan Community organising their involvement in the Parish.

Michael Fagan

For constant dedicated service to the Parish of St Bernadette’s, Castle Hill, as a member of the Finance Committee overseeing parish maintainence, diligently project managing the reconstruction and refurbishment of the church after the ceiling collapsed in 2013.

Jane Favotto

For her tireless commitment to Diocese of Parramatta as Communications Manager, managing the communication needs of the Bishop and Diocese, and using her journalistic talent as Editor of the award winning Catholic Outlook.

Gerald Greene

For long and distinguished service to the parish of Holy Family, Mt Druitt in commitment to the Schoenstatt Movement, being instrumental in bringing about the Pilgrims’ Mass at Mt Shoenenstatt, ministering to the sick and elderly, and assisting as Sacristan at weekday Masses.

Patricia Hale

For diligent service to St Vincent de Paul for over 30 years holding position of Secretary and Treasurer, participating in the music ministry at Holy Trinity Parish, Granville, and great involvement in the primary school and secondary school operations and responsibilities.

Adrianne Hannan

For long-standing commitment in St Vincent de Paul, serving as President, caring for Indigenous Australians, migrants and refugees in the Parish of  St Oliver Plunkett's, Harris Park, and assisting the elderly.

Carol Harding

From the Parish of St Michael's, Baulkham Hills, for her diligence with the St Michael’s Supported Accommodation Programme, showing compassion to all involved, working with various community groups promoting anti-violence towards women, and volunteering in many other community and sporting groups.

Sabine Harriss

For her commitment to the parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Greystanes. As Receptionist, going above and beyond to support the parish. Being involved in many aspects of Parish life including Bereavement Support Group, Catechist, Sacramental Process and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.

Elizabeth Idaszak

For being an intrinsic member of the parish of St Aidan's, Rooty Hill, through her works as Parish Secretary. Doing more than record keeping, personally assisting with rosters, and any additional duties, giving of her own time to ensure exceptional results.

Margery Jackman

For her significant contribution to the spiritual welfare, formation and educations of the students in the Diocese of Parramatta for more than 34 year of service to Education, especially as Principal of Catherine McAuley Westmead. For service as Director of Mercy Works Inc, works with Sister of Mercy and contributions to the Parish of St Patricks Cathedral, Parramatta.

Kylie Jones-Gentle

For her tireless work for numerous charities, including Fr Chis Riley Street Kids, RPA Liver Transplant Unit and Uplift Foundation, raising funds to assist various needs in the parish of St Madeleine Sophie Barat's, Kenthurst, and abroad. She embodies the spirit of Mary MacKillop in our community.

Dorothy & Gustaw Kaster

For their long-standing and unwavering support to the parish of St Andrew the  Apostle's, Marayong, assisting in all ministries and groups, as members of St Vincent de Paul, and assisting with the maintenance of the parish, and support of the previous Parish Priest after his retirement.

Virginia Knight

For unabating service  to the Diocese of Parramatta, and the National Liturgical Council,  assisting in establishing a fund to rebuild the Cathedral,  as personal assistant to the Director of Liturgy,  organising fund raising shopping trips, and in her current role as Journalist for Catholic Outlook.

Br Julian Liddiard OH

For his outstanding service to the Diocese of Parramatta through hospital administration with the Wentworth Area Health Board, ensuring their governance did not disadvantage Catholics especially in the Windsor Hospital.

Patrick McGannon

For his active service to finance committee in various parishes of the Diocese and most recently to the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary, St Mary's, as acolyte, the behind-the-scenes helping hand, for tireless commitment to the aged as a member of the Board of Southern Cross homes.

Sr Venera Nicolosi OSU

For meritorious works in the Diocese of Parramatta and the Parish of  St John XXIII, Glenwood-Stanhope Gardens as teacher and principal, nurturing budding talents, mentoring teachers,  volunteering  with the  St Vincent de Paul’s night patrol van, a volunteer with  “KOW- Kairos Outside the Walls” supporting family and friends of those in prison, establishing the Mary MacKillop Baseball Club.

Graeme O'Connor

For distinguished and long-serving contributions to the Parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Greystanes, as a member of the Parish Finance committee, senior server, parish manager, Master of Ceremonies, assistant Master of Ceremonies for the Diocese, honorary accountant to the charitable foundation of ARS MUSICA AUSTRALIS - raising and distributing over one million dollars to  charitable causes.

Michael Parslow

For tireless commitment to the parish St Madeleine Sophie Barat's, Kenthurst, ensuring the success of the Country Fair, actively participating in all aspects of parish life as liturgy reader, extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, member of subcommittee for the new church construction.

Jim Peters

For many years of loyal service to the parish of St Oliver Plunkett's, Harris Park, as Minister of the Eucharist, an Acolyte, leading Tuesday Evening Novenas, running stations of the cross during Lent, tending to the church before and after Sunday Mass, assisting with fund raising activities and general maintenance.

Silvana Rechichi

For 47 years of service to St Patricks Cathedral Parish as Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Eucharist, prayer group leader, helping during the difficulties that followed fire, member of the Parish council, finance committee. Involved in many activities in the parish.

Barbara Ryan

For generous dedication to the parish Our Lady of the Way Emu Plains as Extraordinary Minister of Eucharist, ministering to the Sick and confined, using her teaching talents to assist with RCIA and Catechist in both Primary and Secondary Schools and being actively involved in St Vincent de Paul. Helping educate young people in trouble.

Doreen Soballa

For continual dedication to the Parish of St Anthony of Padua, Toongabbie, encouraging those around her, 43 years as a Catehchist in State schools, taking SRE at Girraween High School, a Member in RICA, Extraordinary Minister of Eucharist and long-time supporter of Fr Eugene Szondi’s  “Divine Inspirations”.

Nuri Wardrop

For enthusiastic assistance in all aspects of the community life in the Parish of St Madeleine Sophie Barat's, Kenthurst, dedicated to fundraising, the Country Fair and sacramental preparation for the children of the Parish, for whom she is a wonderful role model.

Janice Williams

For her tireless work for the Parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Greystanes, as Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, Reader, assisting with all working bees and fundraisers, outstanding leadership to the youth providing guidance and advice, and a volunteer with Marist Youth.
