Catholic Outlook, June 2010
On Pentecost Sunday, 48 children completed their initiation into the faith community at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Parramatta. The Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, presided at the Mass of Confirmation and First Holy Communion on 23 May 2010.
We celebrate Confirmation because of the assembly’s indwelling of the Spirit. We celebrate because there is a spirit-filled community in which to be a part.
These children completed their initiation with the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation and by receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion. They received Holy Communion for the first time but not the last as each week they will continue their conversion journey.
Confirmation and Holy Communion are initiation sacraments, along with Baptism, and ritualises entrance into Catholic life. The Confirmation liturgy is a sealing of the life in Christ’s Spirit, which the whole Church is to be living already – a celebration of the faith which is already present and apparent.
The beautiful liturgy on Sunday where proud parents brought their children in their ‘Sunday best’ celebrates and makes explicit what has been going on long before the Sunday.
It celebrates the child’s faith journey to this point, accompanied by parents, priests, teachers, catechists and the witness of the community. Congratulations to you all.
