WYD the experience of a lifetime

Diocesan Youth Mass & WYD 2011 Pilgrim Packages Launch at Blacktown
Gearing up for WYD2011 in Madrid.

By Annabelle Cauchi

With World Youth Day 2011 ‘just around the corner’, parishes, schools, groups and movements are gearing up for this awesome event, to be held in Madrid in August next year.

A Youth Mass was held at St Patrick’s Parish, Blacktown, on 25 June, which saw the launch of the WYD pilgrim packages for the Diocese of Parramatta.

Fr Fernando Montano, Chairperson of the diocesan WYD committee, presented the four pilgrim packages and it was exciting to see all the different options.

We have the chance to enjoy WYD week itself in the heart of Madrid as well as visiting places like Assisi, the holy town of the beloved St Francis, or Lourdes where Our Lady first appeared to St Bernadette, or the Holy Land, where we will be blessed enough to retrace the footsteps of Jesus Christ Himself.

Many young people are already signing up with a pilgrimage option organised by their Diocese and have begun to raise the funds to be able to go. A feeling of exhilaration is already in the air!

My first WYD was Rome in the Year of the Great Jubilee in 2000. Since then I’ve had the grace to attend four WYDs, both as a pilgrim and as a group leader.

For me it brings about many different yet wonderful and unforgettable memories and experiences. WYD has changed my life for the better and has played a major role in shaping me into the person I am today.

WYD brings together thousands of young people from all over the globe to celebrate their Catholic faith and love for God, and are invited to deepen their relationship with Jesus.

WYD is also a lot of fun and the sense of joy and fraternity is very tangible. It leaves an indelible mark not only on the pilgrims but also on the secular society where it is held.

Through my work as the Diocesan Youth Worker, I can see that the benefits of WYD08 in Sydney are still being felt among the young people all around the Diocese.

When someone asks me what World Youth Day is all about, I share with them some of my experiences, but I feel that one has to experience WYD to know what it really is!

Join us on this wonderful journey to WYD2011 Madrid!
