Sister Maria Casey RSJ was among the 2012 Australia Day award recipients.
Sr Maria received the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for service to the community as Postulator for the Canonisation of Mary Mackillop, and to the Catholic Church in Australia.
Fr Paul Gardiner also received the OAM for service to the community in the fields of education and religion, as Postulator for the Canonisation of Mary Mackillop, and to the Catholic Church in Australia.
The pair negotiated the extensive procedural processes required to establish the case for canonisation of Australia's first recognised saint, Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
Their archival research established the necessary historical evidence on the life of Mary MacKillop.
Other Josephite sisters to receive the OAM were Sr Mary Margaret Leahy RSJ from Bellevue Hill in NSW and Sr Margaret Anne Culhane RSJ from Yokine in WA.
Sr Mary Margaret’s award was for service to pastoral care as the Chaplain of the Stella Maris Apostleship of the Sea.
Sr Margaret Anne’s award was for service to the international community, particularly refugees from Asia and Africa, to women, and as an educator.
Mr Fergus Denis Ryan, who is Deputy President of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family, was appointed an Officer (AO) of the Order of Australia.Mr Ryan has provided distinguished service to the business and finance sectors, and to the community through philanthropic contributions to cultural, social welfare and educational organisations.
