Celebrating local buildings and residences restored to their former glory was the order of the night at the 2007 Parramatta City Council Heritage Awards, presented at Elizabeth Farm on 1 November.
The Public Heritage Award was won by Murphy House, the restored presbytery that now serves as a diocesan centre within St Patrick's Cathedral precinct.
Judged by a panel including Cr Omar Jamal and heritage experts, Jennifer Hill and Mary-Lynne Taylor, Murphy House was lauded for its "high level of sophistication in its interpretation".
Murphy House is named after Fr Peter Bede Murphy, a popular young priest who died from typhoid in 1904. After his death, the parishioners erected a new presbytery in his memory.
The restoration of Murphy House was made possible with the assistance of a grant of $200,000 from the State Heritage Office. The architects of the restoration project were GMB Architects.
Today, Murphy House serves as a diocesan centre with meeting rooms, a visitors' information centre and the Cathedral shop. Items for purchase include a series of postcards featuring the stunning artworks in the Cathedral and Luminous Simplicity: The architecture and art of St Patrick's Cathedral, Parramatta by the design architect, Aldo Giurgola.
Also available are: Lot One: St Patrick's Parramatta by Sr Vivienne Keely CHF, Stations of the Cross, St Patrick's Cathedral by Sr Rosemary Crumlin RSM, and The Sacred Vessels of St Patrick's.
Murphy House is open from 1-3pm, Monday to Friday.
